The middle school history began in 1960s. The first contributor to the middle school concept was organization called the National middle school assocoation in 1973. The National Middle School Association has its definition of the middle school anD It states the following, "...Middle School ...is specifically structured to meet The development need of young adolescents ages 10 to 15." In most cases, middle school is established for grades 6th through 8th.
The other major contributors to forming middle school education were documents "Turning Points" and "This we believe". BOth published documents immensly contibuted to the understanding of the concept and its importance for the effective education for adolescents. They "shaped middle school philosophy." The last and most recent contribution was made by the "turning poinTs 2000: educating adolescents in the 21st century." This particular publication focused on how to improve education for middle grades and less on its structure.
Therefore, middle school is a learning environment with its primary purpose to meet the developmental needs of adolescents by providing safe atmosphere to explore, to ask questions and to learn.
